For several years, a very ambitious process has been going on to digitalize the entire public administration system relating to the services offered to the public. In an attempt to facilitate the implementation of this transformation, the use of standards for the representation of knowledge, data, and processes can be very useful, in order to have a clear representation of the context in which one acts, of the flow of data exchanged and of the actors involved, to use the elicitation of knowledge and process flows, represented in a standard way, to identify any gaps and bottlenecks in the procedures and work to optimize them, as well as to apply best practices of storage and security of the data exchange. A very common problem in public administrations is the lack of a method for the automatic organization of documents in archives and the management of business processes, as well as tools capable of intelligently managing enormous heterogeneous amounts of data to assist and speed up the work done by public administration staff through automated or semiautomated tools. Process Mining (PM) is a Business Management discipline for discovering, monitoring, and improving business processes. One research topic that I want to investigate concerns Business Process Management based on event logs obtained from public administrations’ IT systems, with a particular focus on knowledge extraction from them, using specific Process Mining techniques. Using Process Mining Discovery techniques it is possible to extract the behaviour of a process from log events; using Conformance Checking techniques it is possible to check whether the process models available correctly follow the log events of the systems in operation, while using Process Mining Enhancement it is possible to extend process models with new perspective. As a result, learning from experts about the main techniques and methodologies of Process Mining during this visit would be a great opportunity for me to grow in my training and acquire the required knowledge to apply during our doctoral research, so as to contribute to the realization of solutions that can operate in the abovementioned context, solve the problems highlighted above, and contribute to the Trustworthy AI field.
The visit at Artificial Intelligence Research Institute (IIIA-CSIC) will have the most beneficial impact on the Ph.D. student Luigi Colucci Cante, who is at the beginning of his doctoral course, as learning analysis techniques and research methodology from an artificial intelligence institute could help him to better calibrate and focus the objectives of his doctoral course.
